All dragon riders are issued a special suit that is very much like a wet suit. It is skin-tight and is tailor made for each rider so that there isn't any part of the suit that will hinder the rider's movements. It allows the rider to sweat through the suit. The suit is self-cooling and heating keeping the rider comfortable and acts as a wind break sot he rider won't be hid by the winds as he's riding his dragon. It is made by magic and weighs a minimum of 25 pounds.
The flight helmet is designed to cover the head effectively, and fully. It allows the rider to breathe during flight and at higher altitudes. Thus it uses the magic of the rider and dragon. They also allow conversations between riders, and protect the eyes against the sun and glare. The riders who ride moon dragons have helmets to help them see at night. It weights at least 4 pounds and can be heavier depending on the size of the rider's head.
There are three types of flight armor worn over a flight suit: light, medium and heavy. Each of the three types of armor is worn by a dragon rider that rides the matching size of dragon.
The light armor is made of chain and plate that is fairly heavy weighing about 40 pounds. The plate, though heavy, is fairly thin and won't stop much.
The medium armor is an upgraded version of the light armor. Weighing about 80 pounds. The mail is heavier and the plate thicker. The armor is enchanted to lighten the armor by about a third.
The heavy armor is very heavy, weighing about 200 pounds. Magic is used in every step of its construction. The plate is made out of very strong and light alloys that are mixed together by alchemists. It is made almost entirely out of plate, and custom made by each blacksmith to fit the rider exactly. The plate of the armor is about half an inch thick. Wizards use spells to lighten the load by about 75%, Techno mages also added some machinery that works with sorcery to increase the wearers strength by 50%. When not riding a dragon rider can only fight for about 30 minutes before becoming exhausted. If not fighting the rider can probably move around for about 2 hours. When the rider is exhausted he'll need at least a good day's rest before recovering. But when riding a dragon the rider can fight until he would normally be exhausted, and be much more effective. This type of armor is nearly indestructible by normal weapons.
A flight saddle is a saddle specially made for dragon riding. It has several straps to keep it strongly in place. These straps are generally armors to prevent cutting. The saddle will stay on the back of the dragon with three-quarters of the straps cut but with so many straps cut the rider won't have stable ride.
The feet of a rider are usually strapped into the saddles. A harness is usually built into the flight suit that runs over the shoulders and between the legs like a parachute harness. Straps are run from the belt to the harness so that the rider will not leave the saddle by more then a couple of feet. The straps are also shortened to tie the rider almost directly to the saddle seat.
When the straps running from the harness to the saddle are loose the rider can stand up in the saddle, use to give the rider a posture to throw a spear. It also allows the rider a better view of the ground on either side of the dragon's neck.
The saddle is slightly magical. Allowing the flesh to flesh link between rider and dragon that the other magic needs to operate. It weighs 3-50 pounds depending on the size of the dragon. The weight mostly caused by the armored straps.
